A Journey in Style: David Wej Enters a New Era of Luxury

By Kunle Oyeleye
From selling suits out of the boot of his car to building a menswear brand with a presence in Nigeria and London, David Wej has come a long way. Nearly two decades after starting his business, the Nigerian designer is entering a new chapter with the launch of David Wej Signature, a luxury line created to meet the evolving needs of customers seeking finer fabrics, superior craftsmanship and a more personalised approach to dressing.

Unveiled in Lagos, the collection brings together premium fabrics from renowned international mills, refined tailoring and handmade accessories. Beyond the clothes, the launch reflects Wej’s ambition to elevate men’s luxury tailoring in Nigeria while expanding his brand’s global reach.
Here is all you need to know about the man David Adebayo Eweje and the evolution of the brand David Wej.
From Corporate Life to Fashion

Fashion has been a passion for Wej since childhood, but his journey into the industry was not immediate. After studying Geography and Regional Planning at Lagos State University, he ventured into the corporate world, working in the telecommunications sector with companies including Intercellular, Econet Wireless and Globacom.
Following his time at Globacom, he decided to turn his lifelong interest in fashion into a business. In 2007, he began selling suits directly to customers, often visiting bank car parks to meet professionals who needed corporate wear. His first store opened in Victoria Island, Lagos, in 2008, marking the beginning of a steady expansion.
Meeting the Needs of an Evolving Customer

The launch of David Wej Signature reflects the changing needs of customers who have grown alongside the brand. After 19 years in business, Wej noticed that some of his longtime clients had progressed from corporate positions into senior executive roles and were looking for something beyond conventional ready-to-wear suits.
The Signature line was developed to meet this demand, offering a more elevated experience through premium fabrics, personalised service and refined construction. Customers can select their preferred materials and have their outfits made to measure.
The Fabrics and Craftsmanship Behind the Collection
At the heart of David Wej Signature is a collaboration with established international fabric mills, including Loro Piana, Drago, VBC, Thomas Mason and other renowned names.
For Wej, luxury goes beyond a label. The quality of the raw materials, the precision of the tailoring and the craftsmanship behind each garment are what distinguish the collection. Its tailoring includes full-canvas and half-canvas construction, while the wider range features silk and cashmere ties, cravats and handmade shoes.
Although Signature serves a more premium market, Wej says affordability remains important to the wider David Wej business. He believes understanding customers’ earning power and pricing products appropriately has helped the brand maintain customer loyalty over the years.
Ready-to-Wear and Made-to-Measure

While Signature introduces a more personalised offering, ready-to-wear remains central to Wej’s business philosophy. He believes Nigerian customers value convenience and are often unwilling to wait several weeks for an outfit.
The brand therefore combines ready-to-wear with made-to-measure services. Wej is careful to distinguish the latter from bespoke tailoring, which involves a more extensive process and multiple fittings. For him, understanding these differences is important in helping customers make informed choices about their clothing.
Taking Nigerian Fashion to the World
Nigeria remains David Wej’s largest market, but the brand has also established a presence in London, where it opened a store in 2021. Its international business includes online orders shipped to customers in the United States, Canada and other parts of Europe, as well as a partnership with online retailer Wolf & Badger. Wej also expressed plans to expand into further international retail channels.
His experience in the UK has strengthened his understanding of the global menswear market. The COVID-19 pandemic forced him to rethink his original focus on formal office wear, as working patterns changed. He subsequently shifted towards occasion wear, helping the brand gain opportunities to dress celebrities for red-carpet events and award ceremonies.
Building a Stronger Nigerian Fashion Industry
Despite his international experience, Wej remains enthusiastic about the Nigerian fashion industry. He believes local designers possess enormous creative talent and can compete with their counterparts abroad. However, he argues that the industry needs stronger supply chains and better commercial structures to translate creativity into sustainable business.
He points to the gap between the excitement generated by fashion shows and the actual business opportunities that follow. Designers, he believes, need more access to buyers and retail platforms that can take their work to wider markets.
Wej also supports emerging Nigerian designers through mentorship and international connections. He says he has mentored several designers and helped introduce Nigerian labels to Wolf & Badger, with the aim of creating more opportunities for local talent.
A New Chapter for David Wej
Looking ahead, Wej hopes David Wej Signature will help redefine luxury menswear tailoring in Nigeria. His ambition is to expand the brand’s international collaborations while continuing to serve a loyal customer base at home.
From its beginnings in bank car parks to its growing international presence, the David Wej story has been shaped by an understanding of customers and a willingness to adapt. With Signature, the designer is building on that foundation, bringing premium fabrics, considered craftsmanship and a more personalised approach to Nigerian menswear.
