What an amazing night it was for movie stars, writers influencers, amongst others who thronged the Expo Center of the Eko Hotel and Suites Lagos, as the ninth edition of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) took center stage.
The three-day event kicked off on the 18th with the cultural night, then the awardees’ gala and runway show on the 19th, it culminated with the Awards Night on Saturday, May 20th, with Ex-Big Brother Naija star Tobi Bakre and Osas Ighodalo (for the second time in a row) carting home the highest awards; Best Actor and Actress of the Year respectfully.
While the AMVCA celebrates and awards the biggest and brightest stars for excellent delivery of their craft, it is also one of the most important nights in the fashion calendar.
Opulent and an evening of true glamour, the AMVCAs brought out the ballgowns, luscious, exquisite silks, and exorbitantly priced jewelry, with celebs bringing out their most show-stopping looks. In all, it was a fantastic night for fashion.
The red carpet saw an unusual amount of beautiful feather detail and tail dresses, with Ex Miss Nigeria, Beauty Tukura (who clinched this year’s awards for Best Dressed) Bimbo Ademoye (who got the awards for Best Actress in a Comedy), and Funke Akindele among the most eye-catching. There was also an abundance of shimmery metallic and classy nudes exemplified by Ini Edo, Chioma Ikokwu, and Lili Afe among others.
If there is one awards event to go big or go home at, it’s the AMVCA and so it was not much of a surprise to see large silhouettes and yards of fabric. This year’s main trend for achieving this was the ruffle and ball dresses, as seen on Diana Edobor, Toyin Abraham, and Toke Makinwa amongst others.
While Beauty Tukura may have won the best dressed this year, it’s however safe to say these celebrities, unlike in previous years brought on their A-game and stunned in perpetually chic gowns that will never go out of style.
Here are some of our favourite looks and some you probably missed on the red carpet.
