In 2010, Queen Ronke Ademiluyi Ogunwusi set out to challenge the status quo. At a time when African designers were often sidelined in global fashion, she created Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL) a platform that not only embraced African creativity, but celebrated it with pride. Fifteen years later, that bold vision has evolved into a movement that has shaped the trajectory of African fashion worldwide.

As the 15 edition sets to hold from August 9-10 in London, in celebration of a landmark anniversary, we sit down with Queen Ronke Ademiluyi Ogunwusi, to reflect on a journey that redefined the global fashion landscape.

What inspired the creation of AFWL?
Fifteen years ago, African fashion was largely invisible on the global stage. But we saw the talent, the heritage, the richness in our culture, and we dared to believe. Africa Fashion Week London was born out of a need to create space for our stories, our designers, and our identity.

What has AFWL achieved in 15 years?
What started as a bold idea has grown into a global movement. We’ve launched countless careers, given a platform to artisans and creatives, and brought African fashion into international conversations, not as a trend, but as a force.

What keeps you inspired?
It’s the resilience and innovation of our designers, the pride in our culture, and the stories waiting to be told. We’ve overcome challenges, yet remained steadfast in our mission to celebrate African excellence. This isn’t just a milestone, it’s a legacy in the making.

What can attendees expect from the 15th edition of Africa Fashion Week London?

This year promises to be an exciting celebration of African fashion, culture, and creativity. Attendees can look forward to four captivating catwalk shows, the vibrant Adire Festival, a focus on sustainable fashion, and immersive cultural experiences.

What is the significance of the Adire Festival during this year’s event?

The Adire Festival will showcase the latest in Adire fabric designs from the Adire Oodua Textile Hub. It’s a tribute to our rich African textile heritage and a celebration of traditional craftsmanship in modern fashion.

How does Africa Fashion Week London support sustainable fashion?
